Excerpts from the book:
It was early Sunday morning, and the phone was ringing. Janet’s voice came over the line, “Ruth, are you awake? Now don’t panic, but Michael is outside on the ledge of his bedroom window.”
I jumped out of bed, ran to Michael’s room, and unlocked the door. He was sitting outside on the second story ledge. It was only two feet wide and sloped downward. He was giggling and laughing, looking into the distance as if he wanted to take off and fly.
Roger had been called to work and was not there to help. I tried to reach Michael through the window, but it was hinged like a door, and when he moved toward me it closed. I was beginning to panic.
Janet, in her bathrobe, came carrying a ladder from her yard to mine. She placed it against the house, and my oldest son climbed up and rescued Michael from his almost-fatal play. I ran downstairs and outside. Janet hugged me and we cried together. She whispered calmly in my ear, “No one will understand unless they’ve been there.” I sensed she was confirming her own journey as well.
